The centers we use in our curriculum are as follows:
- Pretend Play
- This center will have a have a kitchen, dress up section, and shopping cart with pretend food. When the students are in this center they are putting their imagination to use as well as work on their social skills.
- Art
- Students will be able to paint, draw, and color anything they can come up with. We will also use this center to draw about topics we discus throughout the day as well. This center is also going to help with social skills as well as their creative skills.
- Building blocks
- This center will be used to help the children put their imagination to work. In this center we will have enough blocks to help the children build any structure their imagination can come up with. To help the children come up with ideas of things to build, we will have a binder that has pictures of famous structures for them to try to copy out of the blocks. The center will help the children learn to work with each other as well, thus working on their social skills.
- Reading
- This center will be set up like a mini library and will have a variety of books for the children to choose from. They will have bean bags, couches and chairs to utilize while in this center as well.
- Math
- This center will have many tools such as interlocking cubes, abacus, dominoes, number puzzles, plastic links, and memory matching games. All these tools will help the students learn to count and add and subtract as they add cubes or links together then take them away.
- Computer (4yr. and 5 yr. classrooms only)
- This center will be used to play educational games. We will use PBS.org and various websites such as these to work on math, science, reading, social studies skills.
Each of these centers works on cognitive, social emotional, and physical skills.
We also teach through guided instruction. This is where we will work on teaching phonics, mathematics, science, social studies, etc. During instruction time we will read books, have discussions and work on worksheets together to practice what we have learned.
